Once difficult to get to without lengthy layovers, Belize is rapidly becoming a premier destination for Canadians, especially during the cold winter months. Located just south of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Belize enjoys beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures all year round. And, as the only country in the region where English is the official language, it’s easy for Canadians to speak to locals and get around in Belize.
The least densely populated country in Central America, Belize is a truly stunning destination. Over a third of the country is set aside as a protected animal refuge, wilderness sanctuary, or national park, including large sections of the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Belize has the perfect mix of gorgeous offshore islands and lush vegetation in the interior. Although small, Belize has a complex geography that includes verdant mountains, majestic waterfalls (the tallest in Central America), extensive cave networks, fertile plains, and lovely coastal zones along the Caribbean Sea. Offshore, Belize has more than 100 islands, many of them prime sites for diving, snorkeling, fishing, and sailing.
As the former heartland of the vast Maya empire, Belize is also home to more ancient Maya ruins than anywhere else on the planet. Visitors can climb to the top of lofty pyramids or plumb the depths of ceremonial caves that were once used to conduct human sacrifices.
