  • As North America experiences another bitterly cold month in February, a great place to warm up and enjoy some sunshine is Belize. A small country in Central America just a short flight away from the United States, Belize enjoys fabulously warm weather with plenty of things to do and see throughout February.

One of the most beloved events of the year happens in Belize in February. The Placencia Peninsula in southern Belize will be home to the Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival. Held on the weekend before Valentine’s Day, the Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival sees the central main street converted into a 1,000-foot long display of local arts, handicrafts, souvenirs, food, and games. And, of course, there will be plenty of live music.

Placencia Village, located at the southern tip of the peninsula, holds the Guinness Book of World Records position as the town with the smallest main street in the world. More of a sidewalk than a main “street,” the central avenue measures just four feet wide and is completely off-limits to cars and vehicle traffic.

The Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival takes advantage of their record-holding “main street” to bring together artists, musicians, and artisans from the peninsula and around the region to create a fun, two-day festival with plenty of activities, sights, and sounds for the whole family.

The other big reason to visit Belize in February is to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Many couples come to this country nicknamed “The Jewel” due to its gorgeous landscapes, beautiful beaches, and an astounding variety of exotic wildlife.

Valentine’s Day is a great time to enjoy a wide variety of romantic activities such as strolling along the white sand beaches of the Placencia Peninsula, taking a sunset cruise around the nearby reef, hiking through the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Preserve, sharing a candlelit dinner at the Quarterdeck Restaurant at the Laru Beya resort, enjoying a boat tour along the Monkey River, or climbing to the top of an ancient pyramid at a Maya site like Xunantunich.

One of the best places to stay in order to enjoy the Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival and Belize in February is Laru Beya. Located right on the Caribbean coast of the Placencia Peninsula, Laru Beya offers lovely beachfront accommodations, gourmet meals at the renowned Quarterdeck restaurant, and adventure tours to all of the top activities in Placencia.
