Be sure to save the date as the 18th annual Placencia Lobsterfest will take place from June 23-25, 2017. This popular three-day festival coincides with the opening of fishing season, and no place in Belize does lobster better than the Placencia Peninsula.
A narrow strip of land measuring 16 miles from north to south, the Placencia Peninsula is famous for its golden sands and gorgeous views of the Caribbean Sea. Placencia comes to life every June with hundreds of visitors streaming in to enjoy lots (and lots!) of delicious lobster dishes. Ranging from traditional favorites like grilled and steam lobster to interesting culinary choices such as lobster fajitas and lobster pizza, there’s something to suit every palate. Add in savory seafood dishes, multiple delicious sides, and cold drinks, and it’s easy to see why Placencia Lobsterfest is one of the most popular festivals in the country.
After eating your fill, be sure to stick around for more fun and excitement. The festival will have more than 50 booths set up to serve drinks, sell artwork and handicrafts, homemade furniture, souvenirs, and much, much more. And whether you’re a kid or just a kid at heart, there’s plenty of fun for the whole family, including face painting and silly games like Reel in the Dinghy (just as you’d suspect, it involves using a fishing rod to land and then reel in a fishing dinghy) and Cast the Net where players use a traditional fishing net to try and secure a coin lying on the ground.
If you want to try your hand at fishing, anglers can compete in the popular Lionfish Tournament that awards a prize to the biggest fish landed. Other festival favorites include games of tug-of-war, tipsy tuna toss, hot wings eating competitions, kayak races, and cheering on the contestants for Mr. and Mrs. Physique.
Added to the experience is live music showcasing the various cultural and historical musical styles of Belize, whether it’s the African rhythms of traditional Garifuna drumming or the party music of local favorites like punta, reggae, calypso, and breakdown. Many people refer to it as the local version of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, only you never have to worry about cold weather.
The Placencia Lobsterfest began in 1998 and is jointly organized by the local chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Associated and the village council of Placencia. All proceeds from the festivals go towards scholarships for local youth and improving the economy of the peninsula.
