It is Whale Shark Season in Belize

Come snorkel or dive with whale sharks this month! The whale shark is the largest fish in the world and one of the largest creatures of any kind alive today.

Although its size puts them on top of the food chain, these gentle giants mainly feed on planktons and other small fishes and can be seen around full moon at the Gladden Spit Marine Reserve near Placencia during the months of April, May and June.

The shark’s genus name is Rhinocodon typus and the largest shark that have been measured in history was at 40 feet, 7 inches in length with a 4.5 foot wide mouth, and a 4.5 foot high dorsal fin, and 6.5 foot long pectoral fins.

Despite its size, whale sharks are remarkably gentle and curious which make it a special treat for divers and snorkelers.

According to scientists, whale sharks are currently listed as a vulnerable species and have been in existence some 60 million years.
