Paul Nabor, a Paranda musician from Punta Gorda, Belize passed away yesterday at age 84.
Nabor was widely respected in Belize for bringing the soulful music of the Garifuna people to the rest of the world.
According to an article on PBS.ORG, Record producer Ivan Duran was introduced to Nabor’s music by Punta Rocker Andy Palacio and recorded him for inclusion on the album Paranda, which showcases an endangered style of music performed by Garifuna men from Honduras, Guatemala and Belize in their 60s, 70s, even up into their 90s.
In Belize he was hailed as a legend of Paranda Music as well as a buyei, a spirit medium and healer who attended his congregation at a Garifuna temple he built in Punta Gorda.
May he rest in peace!
